The Museum Council of Iceland

In June 2001 The Museum Council of Iceland was founded with a set of new legislation, the Museum Act nr. 106/2001, Act nr. 105/2001 that deals with the transfer of cultural objects, and Act nr. 107/2001 dealing with the preservation of cultural heritage. The Council is composed of five members, the director of each of the  three head museums, The National Museum of Iceland (Þjóðminjasafn Íslands) (cultural history heritage), The National Museum of Natural History in Iceland (Náttúruminjasafn Íslands) (natural history heritage), and the National Gallery of Iceland (Listasafn Íslands) (visual arts heritage). In addition, two members are appointed by organizations of vested interest, one from the Association of Icelandic Museums and Museum Professionals (Félag íslenskra safna og safnmanna), and one from the Association of Local Authorities in Iceland (Samband íslenskra sveitarfélaga).

The Museum Council works under the Icelandic Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture (Menntamálaráðuneyti), and deals with various tasks regarding the national cultural and natural heritage.

The Council is a co-operative forum for Icelandic cultural and natural museums.
It supervises the Museum Fund and distributes from it monetary government grants to museums in accordance to the Museum Act nr. 106/2001 (not available in English yet). The Council is responsible for the execution of Act nr. 105/2001, dealing with the transfer of cultural objects between countries (not available in English yet). One task related to that law is the granting of permits for the transfer of cultural valuables from Iceland. In addition to this the Council addresses a number of other diverse tasks relating to its field.

The Museum Council’s office is situated in the National Museum of Iceland (Þjóðminjasafn Íslands),  at Suðurgata 41, 101 Reykjavik, Iceland. The Managing Director of the Council is Ágústa Kristófersdóttir.
